Bad news for virtual entrepreneurs. eBay is banning the sale of virtual goodies such as currency or avatars used in RPGs.
"Because of those legal complexities, we felt the most prudent thing to do at this point was to ban them from sale for the site," OnlineMediaDaily has eBay spokesman Hani Durzy saying.
But, Anshe Chung was no doubt relieved to discover, Second Life is different.
eBay will continue to allow users to buy and sell items used in virtual world Second Life, says the story, which qotes Durzy as declaring:
"Our current mode of thinking is there's a legitimate question as to whether Second Life should be lumped in with these massively multiplayer online games". Apparently, Second Life, with a virtual economy and a virtual currency that can be exchanged for real dollars, is more of a "virtual world with a virtual economy" than a game.
Or as Donald Rumsfeld once put it, "If I know the answer I'll tell you the answer, and if I don't, I'll just respond, cleverly."
