"Two Internet bellwethers team up in a 'best of breed' partnership," is the way the Motley fool describes a deal between Yahoo and eBay who, it says, have announced a, "strategic alliance that will showcase their respective core strengths on both sites".
Translated, that means they've teamed up to ferret out ways to flood us with even more unwanted and unasked-for advertising and promotions.
"Yahoo will be eBay's exclusive provider of graphical ads and Yahoo will promote eBay's PayPal to its merchants and publishers," says SearchEngineWatch.
But it's, "important to note that this partnership is primarily to provide graphical ads and click-to-call ads and on a lesser standpoint to provide some search ads," it says. "The limited search ads are probably because eBay does not want to detract visitors from the eBay products and auctions, which is logical."
With Google's recent $1 billion investment in AOL, "the Yahoo-eBay partnership also figures to intensify the pressure on Microsoft to find an ally as it tries to become a more formidable player in Internet advertising," believes the Associated Press, adding:
"Microsoft is believed to be competing against Google to provide search ads on MySpace.com, an increasingly popular teenage hangout owned by News Corp.
"Unlike the Google-AOL deal, Yahoo and eBay aren't swapping any money. Instead, they are pooling together in their resources in an effort to boost their revenue beginning next year -- a tantalizing prospect that provided a lift to their recently slumping stocks."
